Yakari, the little Sioux, wants to save his injured friend Buffalo-Seed. While Rainbow tries to heal their friend, Yakari gallops with Little Thunder to the far reaches of Sioux territory to seek help from the only being capable of awakening him: Buffalo-Seed’s totem, the fearsome giant bison Thathanka!

Yakari, protected by Great Eagle, his totem, who gave him the fabulous power to talk to animals, lives happily in the land of the Sioux. He gallops with his friend, the wild mustang Little Thunder, and plays with two friends his own age, Rainbow and Buffalo-Seed. Yakari proudly wears his feather of bravery, proof of the tribe‘s respect for him. But such honor makes one jealous: Buffalo-Seed, breaking their oath of friendship, defies authority and puts himself in great danger by attempting to capture a bison on his own. Seriously
wounded, he plunges into a deep coma from which the shaman says he will never awaken. Determined to save him, Yakari and Rainbow investigate, only to discover that Buffalo-Seed also has a totem: the giant bison Thathanka! Thathanka may have the power to bring their friend back to life, but the totem refuses to appear.
